A sunset that looks rich and dimensional on an iPhone can turn flat after the wrong export. That is why photographers ask, does HEIC keep HDR? The short answer is yes: HEIC can store HDR image data. But whether you continue to see HDR depends on the source image, the app creating the HEIC file, the Photos workflow, and the display or service used to view it.

For Apple users managing a growing RAW library, the distinction matters. A smaller HEIC file can be an excellent long-term, everyday version of an edited photo – provided the conversion keeps the high-dynamic-range rendering you worked to achieve.

Does HEIC Keep HDR?

HEIC is Apple’s commonly used implementation of the HEIF image format. It is a container format, not a promise that every file inside it is HDR. A HEIC image may be standard dynamic range (SDR), or it may include HDR information with wider brightness and color capability.

Apple devices support HDR photography throughout the capture, editing, and viewing experience. On a compatible iPhone, iPad, or Mac display, HDR photos can show brighter highlights, more natural specular detail, and smoother tonal transitions than an SDR version. HEIC is designed to carry this efficiently, often at far smaller file sizes than RAW.

The important qualifier is this: an HDR-capable format only preserves HDR when the conversion software actually writes an HDR-capable output. If an app renders the source into an SDR image before encoding it as HEIC, the resulting file is still HEIC, but it is no longer HDR.

That is the difference between format support and workflow support.

What “HDR” Means in Apple Photos

HDR is not a single setting that behaves identically across every photo type. In Apple Photos, it may refer to the extended brightness range visible on modern Apple displays, an HDR capture processed by the iPhone camera pipeline, or an edited image rendered with high-dynamic-range detail intact.

A RAW file adds another layer. RAW captures preserve extensive sensor data and editing latitude, but RAW is not automatically a finished HDR photo. Your edit determines how highlights, shadows, white balance, color, and contrast are rendered. When you convert that completed edit to HEIC, the converter needs to preserve the appropriate rendered HDR appearance rather than flattening it to a standard image.

This is especially relevant for Apple ProRAW. ProRAW gives you room to recover and shape detail, while Apple’s imaging pipeline contributes computational photography data. When HDR Is Preserved

  • Sharing, exporting, or uploading must not force an SDR fallback.

That final point catches many photographers. Your HEIC file can retain HDR perfectly in Photos, then appear less dramatic in a messaging app, web upload, older display, or recipient’s device. The file may be fine. The viewing path may simply be SDR.

Why an HDR HEIC Can Look Different Elsewhere

HDR is display-dependent by design. A bright reflection on water may be rendered well above ordinary white on an HDR-capable display. On an SDR screen, that same reflection has to be mapped into a narrower brightness range. The image can still look good, but it will not have the same highlight intensity.

Color management also affects the result. Apple Photos is built around color-managed displays and wide-gamut workflows. An app that ignores or mishandles embedded color information can make a photo look muted, overly saturated, or unexpectedly contrasty. That is not always evidence that HDR was lost, but it is a sign the viewing environment is not interpreting the image as intended.

For this reason, judge HDR preservation in the place where you manage the library: Photos on a current Apple device with an HDR-capable display. Compare the source and converted image there, not only in a browser preview or a third-party chat app.

HEIC vs. RAW: The Useful Trade-Off

RAW and HEIC serve different jobs. RAW is the editing master. It is valuable when you may revisit exposure, color, noise reduction, or cropping decisions later. HEIC is a highly efficient rendered image, suited to photos whose edit is complete and whose value is in viewing, sharing, and keeping organized in Photos.

Converting RAW to HEIC does mean giving up most of the original sensor-level editing flexibility in the new file. No conversion format can make a rendered HEIC behave exactly like the original RAW. If a photograph is a portfolio image, a paid client deliverable, or something you expect to re-edit substantially, retaining the RAW master is often the right call.

For the rest of a library, the savings can be substantial. How to Check Whether Your HEIC Still Has HDR

Use a simple visual check before making a batch decision. Open the RAW source and its converted HEIC in Photos on an HDR-capable Apple device. Look at the brightest areas first: sunlit clouds, lamps, reflections, polished metal, or bright windows. Then compare color transitions in skies and shadow detail in high-contrast scenes.

Do not expect the two files to have identical file sizes, metadata structure, or editing latitude. Do expect the finished image to retain its intended appearance. If the HEIC looks flat only after sharing outside Photos, test the file again in Photos before assuming the conversion failed.

It also helps to preserve a small RAW set at first. Convert a representative group of landscapes, indoor scenes, portraits, and ProRAW images.
