There is no single format that wins every job. RAW protects capture flexibility. HEIC is usually the smartest everyday format inside Photos. JPEG remains useful when compatibility matters more than efficiency. The practical goal is choosing a format that fits each stage of your library instead of treating every photo as a permanent master file.
Best formats for Apple Photos at a glance
For most Apple Photos libraries, HEIC is the best default for finished photos you want to keep, view, share, and sync efficiently. It offers excellent image quality at much smaller file sizes than JPEG and can preserve modern iPhone features such as HDR.
RAW and Apple ProRAW are best for photographs still in the editing stage, especially files where exposure, white balance, highlight recovery, or detailed color work may change. HEIC: the default format for a lean Photos library
HEIC is Apple’s common file extension for images encoded with HEIF, a modern image container and compression standard. In practical terms, it is designed to deliver similar visual quality to JPEG at substantially smaller sizes. For iPhone photographers, that can mean fitting far more photos into the same device and iCloud storage.
HEIC also fits Apple Photos particularly well. Photos can display it natively on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, organize it in albums, sync it through iCloud Photos, and apply non-destructive edits. Current iPhones can capture in HEIC by default, including features that benefit from Apple’s modern imaging pipeline.
HDR is another reason not to automatically export everything as JPEG. A compatible HEIC image can retain a wider brightness range, so sunlit clouds, specular highlights, and bright displays look closer to the scene you photographed. Exporting to JPEG may create a standard dynamic range version, depending on the export and sharing path.
HEIC is not perfect for every destination. Some older apps, client portals, ecommerce tools, and Windows-based workflows still expect JPEG. When you know a file must work almost anywhere, JPEG removes friction. But that is a reason to create a compatible copy when needed, not necessarily a reason to keep your entire personal library in a larger format.
RAW and ProRAW: keep them while their flexibility matters
A RAW file records far more of the camera sensor data than a finished image format. Canon CR3, Sony ARW, Nikon NEF, Fujifilm RAF, Olympus ORF, Panasonic RW2, and other camera RAW formats give you room to correct an image after capture. Apple ProRAW brings a similar editing-first idea to supported iPhone Pro models, combining RAW data with Apple’s computational photography information.
That latitude is valuable when a photo is difficult: mixed lighting, a high-contrast sunset, an underexposed indoor scene, or a portrait that needs careful color correction. If you expect to revisit the edit, print large, or deliver work professionally, keeping the RAW original makes sense.
The cost is storage. RAW and ProRAW files can be many times larger than HEIC, and thousands of them make iPhone, iPad, Mac, backup drives, and iCloud plans work harder. They also add weight without adding visible value once an image has been edited to your satisfaction and will mostly be viewed on phones, tablets, and standard displays.
A sensible workflow is to keep RAW files for active projects, portfolio work, difficult images, and favorites you may re-edit. For completed everyday photos, a high-quality HEIC can be the better long-term library format. This is not a judgment on image quality. It is a decision about whether you still need the sensor data.
JPEG: still the format for universal handoffs
JPEG has been the common photo-sharing format for decades because almost everything can open it. If you are emailing images to a client, uploading to a service with uncertain format support, or sending photos to someone using older hardware, JPEG is dependable.
Its weakness is efficiency. At a comparable visual quality level, JPEG generally needs more storage than HEIC. JPEG also does not preserve the same HDR experience as a compatible HEIC workflow. Repeatedly saving and recompressing JPEG can further reduce image quality, though a single high-quality export is usually fine for normal sharing.
Use JPEG as an output format when the recipient or platform calls for it. It is less compelling as the default storage format for an Apple-only household that already uses Photos across its devices.
PNG and TIFF: useful, but not photo-library defaults
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it excellent for screenshots, logos, interface assets, scans with text, and graphics. A PNG photo from a camera is usually a poor storage choice because photographic detail creates large files with little practical benefit.
TIFF is also commonly lossless or lightly compressed, and it is accepted in many professional print and editing workflows. Its files can be enormous. Keep TIFF for a specific deliverable, print requirement, or editor handoff. Do not convert a typical Photos library to TIFF in the name of quality preservation.
Preserve more than pixels when you convert
Format decisions can become risky when conversion means exporting files to Finder, processing them in another app, then importing them back into Photos. That loose-file workflow can create duplicates and make it easy to lose the context that makes a Photos library useful: albums, favorites, captions, locations, dates, keywords, and existing edits.

Your storage plan should reflect the value of the file, not the anxiety of deleting it. Keep RAW where future editing has a real purpose. Keep HEIC where the photo is already finished. Export JPEG only when compatibility asks for it. That approach leaves more room for the photographs you have not taken yet.
