Convert DNG to HEIC

DNG is the universal RAW format — and on iPhone Pro models it is what Apple ProRAW saves. ProRAW captures are big (a 48-megapixel ProRAW can top 75 MB), and they are the single fastest way an iPhone fills its own storage. RawToHEIC converts your DNG and ProRAW files to HEIC right inside Apple Photos, keeping every edit, album, favorite, and location.

What is a DNG file?

A DNG file is an open, universal RAW format created by Adobe, used by Apple ProRAW on iPhone Pro models (iPhone 12 Pro and later) and by many cameras, drones, and apps. It stores the unprocessed sensor data so you keep full editing latitude. Apple ProRAW DNGs are especially large — 25 to 75 MB depending on resolution — which is why a phone shot in ProRAW can run out of space so quickly. Once you have finished editing a ProRAW shot, converting it to HEIC keeps the photo and its HDR while reclaiming most of the space.

Everything about the photo is kept

  • Edits, crops, and adjustments carry over exactly as they look in Photos.
  • Album membership, favorites, captions, and keywords stay put.
  • Location and full camera metadata (EXIF) travel with the HEIC.
  • HDR is preserved with an ISO 21496-1 gain map.
  • Your originals are never deleted until the HEIC is saved and verified.

Cameras that shoot DNG

DNG is written by Apple ProRAW (iPhone Pro models) and many cameras, drones, and apps — ProRAW files run 25–75 MB. If any of these are in your library, RawToHEIC converts their files:

DNG questions, answered

What is a DNG file?

A DNG is Adobe’s open, universal RAW format. On iPhone, Apple ProRAW photos are saved as DNG; many cameras and apps use it too.

Is Apple ProRAW a DNG file?

Yes. ProRAW is Apple’s implementation of the DNG format, with extra computational data. RawToHEIC converts ProRAW DNGs and preserves their HDR.

Can I shrink my ProRAW / DNG files without losing edits?

Yes. RawToHEIC converts them to HEIC — much smaller and visually identical — keeping your edits, album, favorite, location, metadata, and HDR.

Does converting a DNG reduce quality?

HEIC is lossy, so it trades a difference most people cannot see for a large drop in size. Keep originals for irreplaceable shots; convert the rest.

Will it delete my original DNG files?

Only if you choose to, per batch, and never until the HEIC is saved and verified. Deleted originals stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
