Convert NRW to HEIC

NRW is the RAW format Nikon used on its higher-end Coolpix compacts. The files are smaller than NEF, but a pocket camera you carried everywhere can leave a big, scattered pile of them. RawToHEIC converts your NRW files to HEIC inside Apple Photos, keeping every edit, album, favorite, and location.

What is an NRW file?

An NRW file is a Nikon RAW format used on advanced Coolpix compact cameras, distinct from the NEF format on Nikon’s interchangeable-lens bodies. It stores unprocessed sensor data, so it is larger than a JPEG — usually around 10 to 20 MB. If you shot RAW on a Coolpix, converting those finished NRW files to HEIC keeps them in your library and gives the space back.

Everything about the photo is kept

  • Edits, crops, and adjustments carry over exactly as they look in Photos.
  • Album membership, favorites, captions, and keywords stay put.
  • Location and full camera metadata (EXIF) travel with the HEIC.
  • HDR is preserved with an ISO 21496-1 gain map.
  • Your originals are never deleted until the HEIC is saved and verified.

NRW questions, answered

What is an NRW file?

An NRW is a Nikon RAW format from advanced Coolpix compact cameras — unprocessed sensor data, distinct from the NEF format used by Nikon’s interchangeable-lens cameras.

How do I open an NRW file?

Recent Apple Photos and Preview open NRW, and RawToHEIC reads them from your Photos library to convert them in place.

Can I convert NRW to HEIC and keep my edits?

Yes. Conversion keeps your adjustments, album, favorite, location, and metadata, and produces a much smaller file.

Does converting an NRW reduce quality?

HEIC is lossy — a small visual trade for a large size reduction. Keep originals for irreplaceable shots.

Will it delete my original NRW files?

Only if you choose to, per batch, and never until the HEIC is saved and verified. Deleted originals stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
