Convert 3FR to HEIC

3FR is Hasselblad’s medium-format RAW, and the files are some of the largest any camera makes — a 100-megapixel back can write well over 100 MB per frame. Even a modest shoot is enormous. RawToHEIC converts your 3FR files to HEIC inside Apple Photos, keeping every edit, album, favorite, and location.

What is a 3FR file?

A 3FR file is a Hasselblad RAW photo — the raw capture from a Hasselblad medium-format camera or digital back. With sensors up to 100 megapixels, a single 3FR is commonly 60 to 120 MB, so even a small library is huge. RAW is essential while you grade these images, but finished frames no longer need that size, and converting them to HEIC keeps the look while reclaiming the overwhelming majority of the space.

Convert 3FR right inside Photos

No exporting to Files, no importing back, nothing uploaded. Select your 3FR photos in Apple Photos, tap Share, and let RawToHEIC convert them on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Everything about the photo is kept

  • Edits, crops, and adjustments carry over exactly as they look in Photos.
  • Album membership, favorites, captions, and keywords stay put.
  • Location and full camera metadata (EXIF) travel with the HEIC.
  • HDR is preserved with an ISO 21496-1 gain map.
  • Your originals are never deleted until the HEIC is saved and verified.

3FR questions, answered

What is a 3FR file?

A 3FR is a Hasselblad RAW photo — the raw capture from a Hasselblad medium-format camera, among the largest image files in regular use.

How do I open a 3FR file?

Apple Photos and Preview open 3FR on a recent Mac, iPhone, or iPad, and RawToHEIC reads them straight from Photos.

Can I shrink my 3FR files without losing edits?

Yes. RawToHEIC converts 3FR to HEIC and keeps your edits, album, favorite, location, and metadata, in a dramatically smaller file.

Does converting a 3FR reduce quality?

HEIC is lossy, so it trades a small visible difference for an enormous size reduction. Keep originals for your hero frames; convert the rest.

Will it delete my original 3FR files?

Only if you choose to, per batch, and never until the HEIC is saved and verified. Deleted originals stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
