Convert HEIC files

HEIC is the modern, efficient image format Apple has used by default since iOS 11 — it is what RawToHEIC converts your RAW and oversized images into. If you already have HEIC files from another app or an export, RawToHEIC can re-process them on-device too, keeping the picture and its metadata intact.

The same photo as a JPEG (9 MB) and as a HEIC (4 MB) — HEIC is the smaller, modern format RawToHEIC converts your library into.

What is an HEIC file?

A HEIC (.heic) file stores a photo using modern HEVC compression, holding an equivalent image in roughly half the space of a JPEG, with support for HDR and depth. It is the default capture format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11 and is the format RawToHEIC produces. If you have HEIC files from elsewhere, RawToHEIC can re-encode oversized ones and standardise them; it converts large RAW, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF images into HEIC, but it does not convert HEIC back to JPEG.

No exporting to Files, no importing back, nothing uploaded. Select your HEIC photos in Apple Photos, tap Share, and let RawToHEIC convert them on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Everything about the photo is kept

  • Edits, crops, and adjustments carry over exactly as they look in Photos.
  • Album membership, favorites, captions, and keywords stay put.
  • Location and full camera metadata (EXIF) travel with the HEIC.
  • HDR is preserved with an ISO 21496-1 gain map.
  • Your originals are never deleted until the HEIC is saved and verified.

Where HEIC files come from

HEIC is what Apple devices capture by default. RawToHEIC produces HEIC from your other formats, and can re-process existing HEIC files on-device:

HEIC questions, answered

What is a HEIC file?

A HEIC is Apple’s modern photo format, the default on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11. It stores a photo in about half the space of a JPEG, with HDR and depth support.

Can RawToHEIC convert HEIC to JPG?

No — RawToHEIC converts large RAW, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF images into HEIC, not the other way around. To export a HEIC as JPEG, use the Files app or Photos’ export options.

Why does my library still have HEIC files taking space?

HEIC is already efficient, but high-resolution or HDR HEICs can still be large. RawToHEIC can re-encode oversized HEICs on-device to recover some space.

Is HEIC better than JPEG?

For storage, yes — HEIC holds a comparable photo in roughly half the size, and it supports HDR. That is why RawToHEIC converts your library into HEIC.

Will my originals be safe?

Originals are only deleted if you choose, per batch, and never until the new file is saved and verified. Deleted originals stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
